Electric revolution awaits in Gothenburg archipelago
Gothenburg's southern archipelago is facing a significant change when Västtrafik switches to mainly electric ferries from 2027. The Norwegian shipping company Torghatten will take over the traffic after Styrsöbolaget, which will mean both environmental benefits and improved travel opportunities for the islanders.
Following a procurement process that began in spring 2023, Västtrafik has signed a 15-year contract with Torghatten, valid until 2042. This agreement involves a comprehensive upgrade of the archipelago service.
- We had two bidders, Torghatten and Styrsöbolaget. Both met our high quality requirements, but Torghatten submitted the most economically advantageous bid and was therefore awarded the contract. With their long experience in shipping, we are sure that they will run the traffic as well as Styrsöbolaget has done, says Anna Johansson, Business Area Manager at Västtrafik.
The biggest change will be the switch to electric power - at least 90% of traffic will be powered by electricity. This is expected to not only significantly reduce emissions but also provide a quieter and more pleasant environment in the archipelago by reducing engine noise.
Faster and more efficient travel
When Torghatten takes over in December 2027, the fleet will be expanded to eight vessels, three of which will be fast ferries. The new fast ferries will also have greater capacity than the current ones, increasing the number of passengers per trip.
The aim is to develop transport in the southern archipelago towards environmentally friendly and efficient public transport with good travel opportunities for both islanders and those who commute to the mainland. In the planning, special consideration has been given to the needs of commuters. The new timetables will be better adapted for both work and school commuting and at the same time made easier to follow.
