Electrically converted sailboat leads the way - Collaboration enables development of sustainable maritime solutions
When boat owner Monika Blidner needed to replace her old diesel engine, she chose to switch to an electric motor - a choice that both reduces the environmental impact and shows how the electrification of recreational boats is now gaining ground in our region.
The collaboration between Vindövarvet and Green Marine Motors is an example of the type of market-driven development that the go:LEIF project wants to facilitate - where more actors see the possibilities of electric power and sustainable services at sea. The project brings together municipalities, companies and research environments to strengthen the transition along the Skagerrak coast.
What made you choose electric power?
-"I saw a lot of advantages with electric power. It is easy to charge in ports and I avoid diesel, oil and exhaust fumes that affect both me and the environment. The boat runs quietly, odorless and without noise and there are no emissions in our shallow waters. In addition, it feels safer to avoid the risk of engine failure and to have a completely clean engine room," says Monika Blidner.
At Vindövarvet, the previous engine was removed and the boat was rebuilt to accommodate a modern electric drive solution, installed by Green Marine Motors. The fact that the work is now being carried out by established companies shows that electric conversion is becoming a viable service in the market.
From individual choices to regional transition
The conversion of Monika's sailboat has not been completed within go:LEIF, but clearly illustrates the development the project wants to contribute to when it ends in 2025 - where more companies, boat owners and actors see the potential of electric power and sustainable maritime solutions. Through the project's knowledge exchange, mapping and test environments, the conditions for this transition to continue to grow in the region are strengthened.
On board, Monika notices a big difference.
-"It's a completely different experience of nature. I can hear the water along the hull and the wildlife is not disturbed in the same way," she says.
For her, electric power has become a safe and convenient choice. The hope is that more boat owners will have the opportunity to discover the benefits of electric power in the future - from quieter running to cleaner water - and that the transition can contribute to more sustainable boating in our region.
-"I would definitely recommend other boat owners to consider electric power," says Monica.
