Stenungsund paves the way for boating's transition
It started as an open question: What can the Port of Stenungsund do to contribute to the municipality's environmental goals? One of the answers was to install a charging post for electric and hybrid boats.
The whole process has gone very smoothly, says Per Jacobsson, harbor master.
Stenungsund's municipal harbor has around 500 berths and is run by harbor master Per Jacobsson. He keeps up to date on what is happening in the market for electric and hybrid boats and what the boat owners want for the service of the harbor.
- So far, I have not noticed that there is any great demand for charging facilities. At the same time, it's not surprising that no one buys an electric boat or converts their boat if there is no possibility of charging. Someone has to start," says Per Jacobsson.
Preparation and coordination kept costs down
A few years ago, a major job was done to upgrade the electricity throughout the port. They took the opportunity to prepare for more electricity on all piers to be ready if the demand for charging facilities increases.
- Because we have done that job, it will be much easier to change when needed.
In the case of the charging point in the marina, coordination meant that the total cost was around SEK 75 000. When digging for lighting in the area, the port took the opportunity to get a pipe down that enabled infrastructure for charging. In this way, the costs of the trenches could be shared. They were also able to use the municipality's existing contract for car charging points.

- It also made things a lot easier, although the technical side is the least of the problems. We have a good location in the middle of the city center and were able to get the power in a relatively easy way, says Per Jacobsson.
Hoping for boats to recharge this summer
Now it is possible to charge your electric boat in Stenungsund's guest harbor next boating season. The price will be SEK 5.19 KW/h. Per Jacobsson hopes that there will now be boats that need charging.
- Now we have taken the first step. We will follow the interest and evaluate along the way.
